Is your website really accessible?

Do you want to know if your website is accessible? Don't rely on the statements of your internet agency alone. Verification by an independent facility will determine whether your site corresponds to the legal requirements of the BITV. According to BITV, a site is accessible, if it fulfils the criteria priority 1. In addition, central navigation and entrance areas must fulfil the points in priority 2. Web designers have continued to improve accessibility since the publishing of BITV. Therefore a test should consider the current regulations.

Check should be timely

Designers and programmers can be supported with tests in web designing. If the checks are timely then development can be sent in the right direction as well as time and money being saved.

Testing in different stages of the project is wise:

  • Design: Before a programmer starts work the design should be verified. At this stage it can be decided if the contrasts are high enough and if the pages are clearly laid out. With this test, the implementation effort can be strongly reduced. Only if the design is accessible is the site converted to HTML and CSS.
  • Implementation: During or after the implementation a test shows which barriers still exist and the criteria of BITV are tested. At this stage the designer should have a competent partner to whom he can direct any technical questions.
  • Quality control: Before the website goes online and press releases are published, the accessibility should be finally verified. It should be checked that the programmer has removed all barriers that were found in the former tests so that the site owner avoids negative feedback.

The perspective of disabled users

Accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the internet without problems. It is important that tests are performed from the perspective of blind, visually impaired, manual locomotive impaired, learning disabled and deaf people. If possible, tests with programs should be supplemented with user tests. For example, blind people can check the pages with a screen reader and learning disabled people could verify the language.

User tests are recommended by WEB for ALL, because relevant people are the best to decide if a website is accessible for them. Soft criteria, like language can not be tested by a program alone. Correct HTML-code could be read by a screen reader in a way that is not understandable. If for example spaces are missing in the formatting of telephone numbers then numbers in the billion ranges are read. Such numbers can not be memorized by anyone. User tests can refer to barriers that are missing in the legal requirements of BITV. How new versions of aids function, can be rated well by users with disabilities because of their own experiences. Especially with advancements of the internet people with disabilities should take part.
