Legal situation in Germany

Accessibility in information technology is legally fixed in many European countries. In most of the countries private providers are not obligated to provide accessibility. In contrast, public authorities in some countries are bound to legal regulations regarding accessibility which are stated in anti-discrimination laws.

In Germany the according regulations are stated in the Disability Equality Law ( Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz - BGG) which came into effect in 2002. The requirements are valid for all publicly available websites issued by the Federal Government. On the level of the federal states the regulations and deadlines for their implementations are different.
